Re-elected NDC MP for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, will today, July 4, be formally sworn in as the MP in Parliament.
Mr. Quayson was elected for the second time in a row in the Assin North by-election on Tuesday, June 27, beating the NPP’s Charles Opoku and the LPG’s Bernice Sefenu.
The by-election was necessitated by a Supreme Court decision that his name be struck off from the records of Parliament due to nationality issues.
His re-election has since sparked controversy, with calls for the Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, to discontinue the case.
However, Mr. Yeboah Dame, in an interview with the press on Monday, described such calls as unhealthy and an attempt to traverse the course of justice. According to him, his office will issue a formal statement soon in response to such calls.
The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, has described the daily trial as unacceptable.
Mr. Quayson is also scheduled to appear before the Accra High Court later today for the commencement of a criminal proceeding against him.
