The Ghana Railway Workers Union is lamenting the collapsing state of their company, the Ghana Railway Company, the Ghana Railway Company Limited (GRCL).
The workers complained that the company has for some time now been saddled with debt, thereby affecting its basic operations, including the running of its freight trains and the payment of staff compensation.
“The company cannot purchase fuel to run its manganese freight as well as its Diesel Multiple Units (DMU), a passenger train,” the workers narrated in a statement on Monday.
“Aside from the inability of the company to purchase fuel, is the overwhelming debt of the company, including the non-payment of salaries to some staff from August and general staff from September, as well as workers’ welfare dues, SSNIT and credit union contributions,” the statement continued.
They implored President Akufo-Akuffo to order the release of funds realised from the sale of scraps of the company to fund its ailing operations, adding that everything must be done to prevent its total collapse.
Ghana’s railway industry, which has been suffering under successive governments, witnessed a relaunch of its operations within Accra-Tema to the praise of commuters.
