The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, has named former Abuakwa South MP and lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, as his new lead counsel in the ongoing criminal case before the High Court in Accra.
The appointment comes after the court recently declined an application by his former lead counsel, lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi, who had sought permission to withdraw from the proceedings. The case remains active at the High Court as legal arguments continue.
In a statement issued on Monday, Mr Boasiako said the decision to appoint Mr Atta Akyea followed careful consultation and was made in the exercise of his constitutional right to choose his own legal representation. He said the change was intended to strengthen the conduct of his defence and ensure it is presented effectively and in accordance with the law.
He expressed gratitude to his previous legal team for their work on the matter, noting that the change should not be interpreted as dissatisfaction with their performance. According to him, the decision reflects his personal right to determine the composition of his defence team.
Mr Boasiako also emphasised that the charges against him are serious, adding that he remains committed to defending himself through the due process of law. He reiterated that he is entitled to the presumption of innocence and that the prosecution bears the burden of proving the allegations beyond reasonable doubt.
He indicated that his new lead counsel will take immediate steps to review the case file, study proceedings already conducted, and make any necessary legal applications and submissions to protect his right to a fair hearing.
Mr Boasiako further expressed confidence in the judiciary, saying he believes the courts will be guided by the Constitution and principles of justice and fairness throughout the proceedings. He also urged the public and all parties involved to avoid speculation as the case progresses.
The statement, titled “Appointment of New Lead Counsel,” formally notified the court and stakeholders of the change in legal representation and reaffirmed his commitment to allowing the legal process to take its course.
The case continues at the High Court in Accra.
