The government has officially confirmed the resignation of former Chief Justice, Justice Sophia Akuffo, from her position as a member of the Council of State.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Monday afternoon, the government spokesperson revealed that Justice Akuffo steps down following a deferred resignation process that began late last year.
The Presidency indicated that while her departure has now been formally finalized, the legal mechanisms to secure her replacement are actively underway.
According to the brief, the prominent jurist tendered her resignation quietly in the third quarter of last year, prompting an internal intervention by her colleagues on the advisory body before the Executive formally signed off on the decision.
“She submitted a letter in September 2025 to the President indicating her desire to resign. She did not disclose the reason for her decision. When the President received the letter, he was required to indicate his acceptance of the resignation. However, at the behest of the Council of State, he held on, as they indicated that they wanted to engage Justice Akuffo to ascertain whether there were any grievances informing her decision to resign. They later reported back that, having engaged her, they were satisfied that the resignation could be accepted.”
The state has clarified that her exit leaves a vacancy that will be filled in accordance with established constitutional protocols, with an official announcement expected in the near future.
