The banter between the EC and the NDC seems far from over, as the latter has, in a fresh statement, vowed to resist the fixing of the alleged unqualified NPP aspirant in the Assin North voter’s register.
In the earlier statement, the EC argued that the phrase “of that same constituency” as it appears in Part 1 of the nomination form in relation to CI 127 referred to persons nominating the candidate for that constituency.
But the NDC noted in their statement that the EC’s interpretation that “of that same constituency” is false and misleading.
“It should be obvious to any educated mind that the phrase “of the same Constituency” contained in Part 1 of the EC’s own nomination form for the Assin North by-election refers to the Candidate who is being nominated (proposed, seconded and endorsed) and not the nominees”, the National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, noted in the statement.
According to the NDC, the phrase suggests that the candidate must be from that same constituency, not persons nominating the candidate.
The NDC also accused the EC of manipulating the electoral process in favour of the ruling NPP.
“The inability and/or refusal of the Jean-Mensah-led administration to correctly interpret this simple criteria set up by themselves shows how depraved our once revered Electoral Commission has become and the extreme lengths they are prepared to go to manipulate the electoral process for the ruling NPP.”
They further called on the EC to amend CI 127 if it so pleases rather than subjecting it to misinterpretation.
The party expressed its resolve not to allow the EC to smuggle in the name of the NPP aspirant, Charles Opoku, in the Assin North voter’s register.
