2024 Elections: Ignore DCOP Waabu’s “unfounded” remark on exclusion of military – Police

The Ghana Police Service has noted that a remark made by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Prince Gabriel Waabu, regarding the exclusion of the military from election security is false.

In a press statement released on February 19, 2024, the comments made by DCOP on the JoyNews’ AM show are not a representation of the Ghana Police Service’s position.

“The statements made by DCOP Mr. Gabriel Prince Waabu concerning election security are unfounded and do not represent the position of the Ghana Police Service. We would therefore like to disassociate the Ghana Police Service completely from the statements and apologise to the Ghana Armed Forces,” the police stated.

The statement added that “the conduct of the officer is being subjected to internal disciplinary processes of the Ghana Police Service.”

According to the police, the military is an integral part of the National Elections Security Taskforce, working in collaboration with other agencies to ensure peace and order during the December elections.

“We want to state that under the National Elections Security Taskforce Architecture, the Ghana Police Service works with all other security services, including the Ghana Armed Forces, to ensure peace, security, law, and order before, during, and after elections. The approach to the 2024 general election will be no different,” the police reiterated.

Background

On February 19, 2024, DCOP Gabriel Prince Waabu had a panel discussion on the JoyNews AM show where he hinted to the public about the preparations of the Election Security Taskforce.

In his statement, he mentioned that the Ghana Police Service would not involve the military as it used to but would rather include other sister security agencies.

“We’re not maybe gonna involve the military as it were because it was not even the police that came out with this issue. So, it’s gonna be only the police, the prisons, the fire, and then immigration…. they are going to support us”, DCOP Waabu said.
