President Akufo-Addo on Tuesday commissioned a $40 million Bulk Supply Point (BSP) electricity project at Adabraka in the Greater Accra region.
The project, which is aimed at improving the stability of power supply to the Central Business District (CBD) and its surrounding areas, was funded with a grant from the Japanese government through the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The $40 million facility has a gas-insulated substation, the first of its kind in the nation, according to President Akufo-Addo.
President Akufo-Addo further revealed that the Accra Central BSP is equipped with a control building, a main transformer platform hosting three 125 MVA transformers, a gas-insulated switchgear platform with 170 kV gas-insulated switchgear and platforms for 161 kV cable terminations, and an indoor 33 kV switchgear system.
He said the facility would lead to a reduction in transmission and distribution losses, ensure high reliability of electricity supply, and also provide a high level of personal safety.
President Akufo-Addo said that the CBD consisted of major formal and informal businesses that contributed significantly to the economy.
“It is evident that the execution of the Accra central bulk supply project is consistent with the country’s power needs and development.”
He pledged that “dumsor” will be a thing of the past with this new facility, touting the achievements of his administration in adding to the national power generation capacity.
“The alternative is not an option. We are not going back to Dumsor; we leave that to President Mahama”, President Akufo-Addo remarked.
The project, according to the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Mochizuki Hisanobu, demonstrated the two countries’ solid cooperation during their 60-year friendship.
Present at the commissioning were the Board Chairman of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Ambassador Kabral Blay Amihere, the Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey.
