The Electoral Commission has announced that the by-election for the Akwatia Constituency will be held on Tuesday, 2nd September 2025, following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.

The Commission made the announcement in a statement issued on Wednesday, confirming that the parliamentary seat had become vacant in line with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution.

In preparation for the poll, the EC said it will receive nominations from prospective parliamentary candidates from Monday, 11th August, to Wednesday, 13th August, 2025. Nomination forms can be downloaded from the Commission’s website from 30th July to 13th August.

“Interested candidates are required to submit their nomination forms to the Returning Officer at the Denkyembour District Office of the Commission between 9:00am and 12:00pm and from 2:00pm to 5:00pm on each of the nomination days,” the statement said.

Each nomination must be supported by a proposer and seconder—both registered voters in the constituency—as well as 18 additional voters who assent to the nomination.

Candidates are also required to submit two recent passport-sized photographs taken against a red background, along with their signed consent to the nomination.

The filing fee has been set at GHS 10,000 per candidate. However, the Electoral Commission has offered a reduced rate of GHS7,500 for female candidates and persons with disabilities.

All completed nomination documents must be submitted in quadruplicate.
