The Parliament of Ghana has explained that contrary to media publications that the Speaker of Parliament has endorsed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and NDC Candidate John Mahama as president, that is not the case.
CitiNewsRoom.com published on Wednesday that following a visit by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, to the Yagbonwura of Damongo at the latter’s 30th anniversary, he predicted that the 2024 general elections will be between Dr. Bawumia and Mr. Mahama.
But in a response on Thursday, Parliament noted that the Rt. Hon. Speaker only sought to suggest that it would be in the interest of people from northern Ghana to be well represented in the top echelons of the political structure.
“He suggested that what should be of interest to the people of northern Ghana, in which context he was speaking, is that they will be well represented at the apex of Ghana’s political structure, and that should be a source of pride to them”, Parliament explained in a statement.
The statement added, “The Rt. Hon. speaker said that despite political differences, we are one people with a common destiny. Our common goal should therefore be to work for the common good of all Ghanaians, irrespective of political differences.”
The Vice President, who is presenting his nomination forms today, is a key candidate for his party’s presidential slot, while the former President won convincingly in their party’s primaries last month.
