Black Stars open World Cup campaign today against Panama without Partey

The Ghana national football team begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L campaign today against Panama national football team in Toronto, but will do so without influential midfielder Thomas Teye Partey, who has been ruled out due to visa complications linked to ongoing legal issues in the United Kingdom.

The absence of Partey is a significant blow to Ghana’s midfield structure, with the former Arsenal star widely regarded as one of the team’s most experienced and composed performers in high-pressure international fixtures. 

His unavailability comes at a critical moment as the Black Stars aim to make a strong start in a challenging group that also includes England and Croatia.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz, however, has moved quickly to shift attention away from the setback, insisting that the squad remains focused and competitive. 

Speaking ahead of the match, Queiroz emphasized depth and adaptability within his team, noting that preparation has been centered on collective performance rather than reliance on individual stars.

“We respect Panama, but we are ready,” Queiroz said in his pre-match remarks, highlighting Ghana’s tactical readiness and belief in their attacking options.

Ghana are expected to lean on the experience of captain Jordan Ayew and the pace of wide attackers such as Antoine Semenyo and Ernest Nuamah, while midfield responsibilities are likely to be shared among Elisha Owusu and Caleb Yirenkyi as they attempt to fill the creative and defensive gap left by Partey.

Panama, meanwhile, arrive with confidence as a disciplined and physically strong side, known for their compact defensive shape and quick transitions. 

They will see the opener as a crucial opportunity to secure points in a group where margins for qualification are expected to be tight.

The match will be played at 11pm GMT.
