Ghana’s gospel community is in mourning following the death of Maame Tiwaa, the celebrated lead female vocalist of the Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo music group. She died in the early hours of Sunday, 7 December 2025, aged 62. The cause of death has not yet been announced.

Maame Tiwaa, born Perpetual Karikari in Domeabra in the Ahafo area, was widely regarded as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Ghanaian gospel music.

For many years, her rich, soulful delivery and deep spiritual expression helped define the sound of Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo, a group whose songs continue to resonate across Ghana and the diaspora.

Her performances on songs such as Wo Haw Ne Sen, Tenabea Foforo, Oko Yi, and Yenka Kyere Agya Se cemented her place as a beloved figure in worship circles nationwide.

In recent months, Maame Tiwaa had made a number of public appearances, including a heartfelt performance honouring Yaw Sarpong at this year’s TGMA event and a memorable rendition at her son’s wedding.

She was also known to have been supporting Yaw Sarpong during his recent ill health, a gesture fans and colleagues have recalled with deep affection.

News of her death has prompted tributes from across the gospel fraternity, with many describing her as warm, gentle, and profoundly gifted.

Her family has yet to release further details on the circumstances of her death or announce funeral arrangements.
