Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has resigned from Ghana’s Council of State, according to multiple media reports citing sources familiar with the matter.
The circumstances surrounding her resignation were not immediately clear. However, the reports said Akuffo had stopped attending meetings of the advisory body following its involvement in the process concerning the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Sources also indicated that she submitted her resignation toward the end of 2025.
Justice Akuffo, who served as Ghana’s Chief Justice from 2017 to 2020, is a member of the Council of State, a constitutional body that advises the president on governance and policy matters.
In April 2025, the Council voted on whether a prima facie case had been established against then Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Thirty of the body’s 31 members voted in favour, while Akuffo abstained. She did not publicly explain her decision.
Neither the Council of State nor the Office of the President had officially confirmed the reported resignation at the time of filing this report.
