The Ghana Police Service has issued a warning to Ghanaians about the constant fraudulent activities and advertisements on some mainstream and social media platforms.
The police explained that the fraudulent acts, which it described as unethical and criminal, pose a threat to the security of our society as they mislead people into performing suspicious acts with the aim of getting rich faster.
“These charlatan activities have serious security implications for our society as a whole. The activities, which often begin with misleading advertisements on some mainstream and social media platforms, lure unsuspecting members of the public, including children, and deceive them into engaging in dubious acts in the hope of getting rich overnight.”
According to the police, their investigations have proven that the rise in such activities has contributed to serious crimes in society, such as kidnapping, with particular reference to the Mankessim murder case, where the suspects lured the victims to take them abroad, and that in Kasoa, where two teenage boys murdered their colleague for money rituals.
The police indicated that they had stepped up their efforts in addressing the menace and called on all relevant stakeholders, including those in the electronic communications industry, to assist them.
“We, therefore, urge operators of electronic communication networks and providers of electronic communications and broadcasting services to rise to their responsibilities and not allow their platforms to be used in the promotion or advertising of such activities,” it added.
It also advised the public to be cautious of such fraudulent schemes while working with the police to stamp them out.
The police made this known in a press statement on Friday, December 23, 2022, signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Chief Superintendent Grace Ansah-Akrofi.
