Survey points to accountability concerns as Mahama’s approval ratings dip

President John Dramani Mahama’s popularity has dipped slightly in the latest survey by Global InfoAnalytics, with many Ghanaians pointing to concerns over how corruption cases are being handled.

The poll shows that Mahama’s approval rating dropped from 73% in July to 67% in September — a six-point fall.

About 22% of voters said they disapprove of his performance, while 11% had no opinion. This leaves the president with a net approval score of +45%.

Although Mahama still enjoys support in every region of Ghana, which is a first in the polling firm’s data, the survey reveals that his biggest losses came from regions that strongly backed him in the 2024 elections. North East recorded the sharpest fall with -52%, followed by Volta (-44%), Ahafo (-37%), Bono (-22%), Western North (-21%), Oti (-19%), and Western (-18%).

Surprisingly, regions that traditionally vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) showed gains in Mahama’s approval. Ashanti rose by +21%, Northern by +14%, and Eastern by +1%.

Explaining the results, Global InfoAnalytics Lead, Mussa Dankwah, suggested that frustrations may be tied to corruption cases and how they are resolved. “The regions that voted for Mahama are perhaps impatient and dissatisfied with how corruption cases are being handled, especially on plea bargain discussions and allegations of deals that allow accused persons to get lighter sentences if they return stolen money. Mahama must tread carefully,” he said.

The survey also found that fewer Ghanaians feel the country is on the right track, with the figure falling from 71% in July to 66% in September. In rating government performance, 18% said “excellent”, 54% “good,” 12% “average,” and 16% “poor or very poor.” The share of those who described government performance as poor rose by five points.

Overall, while Mahama still commands strong nationwide support, the slight decline signals that voters want tougher action on corruption and greater accountability from his government.
