The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, has hailed the inauguration of the institution’s new headquarters, “The Bank Square,” as a milestone in the nation’s financial sector development.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on November 20, Dr. Addison highlighted the facility as a testament to Ghana’s aspirations to become a financial hub in the sub-region.
“This edifice is more than a headquarters; it is a symbol of Ghana’s growing influence as an economic powerhouse and a bold statement of our permanence and resilience in the financial landscape,” Dr. Addison said.
The vision for a new central bank headquarters had been in the pipeline since the early 2000s but faced multiple challenges. Dr. Addison credited President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for facilitating the project by issuing an executive instrument to acquire the land and resolve litigation issues.
The facility, designed by world-renowned Ghanaian architect Sir David Adjaye, stands as the tallest and most sustainable building in Ghana, with a height of 100 meters. It is entirely powered by solar energy, marking a groundbreaking achievement in environmentally conscious architecture across Africa. “If you see the lights on at night, it’s not from the national grid but from our own solar energy system,” the governor touted.
The Bank Square was conceived to streamline the Bank of Ghana’s operations by consolidating its multiple offices in Accra under one roof. The building accommodates over 2,500 staff, offering advanced facilities such as public banking halls, a 1,500-seater auditorium, rooftop terraces, and a currency museum. Dr. Addison underscored that the structure’s efficiency-focused design would improve communication, reduce costs, and enhance synergies in the bank’s operations.
As the financial sector evolves with technological advancements and an expanding customer base, Dr. Addison emphasized the growing responsibilities of the central bank. Over the past 67 years, the scope of the bank’s functions has significantly widened, from managing a handful of financial institutions in 1957 to overseeing more than 830 today.
Dr. Addison lauded the headquarters as a “monumental civic landmark” that symbolises Ghana’s economic revitalisation and leadership in Africa’s financial ecosystem. He also praised the building’s durability and sustainability features, likening it to ancient monuments that have stood the test of time.
The commissioning of The Bank Square not only marks the culmination of decades of planning but also reinforces Ghana’s commitment to economic stability, sustainability, and progress. As Dr. Addison said, the new headquarters stands as “a beacon of Ghana’s revitalisation and a commitment to investing in the nation’s future.”
