Conflicting reports over the fitness of Black Stars goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi have sparked uncertainty about his availability for Ghana’s remaining FIFA World Cup matches, following claims that he had been ruled out with a groin injury.
Several media outlets reported over the weekend that the St. Gallen shot-stopper would play no further part in the tournament due to the injury he sustained, raising concerns among supporters ahead of Ghana’s upcoming fixtures.
However, sports journalist Godfred Akoto Boafo has provided an update suggesting the 29-year-old’s situation may not be as severe as initially feared.
In a social media post, the broadcaster revealed that Ati Zigi had returned to the training ground and was working individually with Black Stars goalkeeper trainer Daniel Gaspar.
“UPDATE: Lawrence Ati Zigi back in the field for the first time since his injury scare. Working out with goalie trainer Daniel Gaspar. The other goalkeepers are training with the general group,” he wrote.
The development has cast doubt over reports that the goalkeeper had already been ruled out of the tournament, prompting questions from football fans over the source of the information.
As of Sunday, neither the Ghana Football Association nor the Black Stars’ medical team had issued an official statement confirming that Ati Zigi had been ruled out of the tournament.
