Four teacher unions, Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), and Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), have jointly impressed upon a “former” Deputy Director of the Ghana Education Service, Anthony Boateng, to reject a proposed extension of his tenure post-retirement.
They threatened to disregard directives by the Deputy Director and other officers who are due to retire should they continue to remain in office by September 30, 2022.
The unions, in a statement, argued that the decision of the Presidency and the Ministry of Education to grant extensions of service to Mr. Boateng and other officers in the education sector has sparked agitations within their rank and file.
“We also call on the Director-General of the GES to direct all retired persons in the Ghana Education Service to hand over immediately to the next in line and proceed on their compulsory retirement,” the statement added.
The Office of the President, through the Education Minister, Yaw Osei Adutwum , granted Mr. Anthony Boateng “a further one-year contract of service as Deputy Director-General (Management Services) of the Ghana Education Service, effective August 17th, 2022 to August 16th, 2023.”
In a letter dated August 19, 2022, it added that Mr. Boateng “will assist in the development of the National Education Institute as approved by Cabinet.”
