The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has strongly criticised the recent dismissal of Dr. Adam Atiku, Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), describing it as a clear case of ministerial overreach and a breach of due process by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
Dr. Atiku was removed from his position on Tuesday, April 22, following an unannounced visit by the Minister to TTH. The visit was prompted by the death of a patient, Bavug Salim, reportedly due to the absence of a working ventilator. A widely circulated video from the visit shows a tense confrontation between the Minister and Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa, Head of the Accident and Emergency Department.
In a statement released the following day, April 23, the GMA condemned not only Dr. Atiku’s dismissal but also the treatment of medical staff during the Minister’s visit. The Association argued that the CEO’s removal circumvented established administrative protocols and violated the principles of natural justice.
The GMA further denounced what it called a “media audit” of the incident, warning that it compromised patient confidentiality, exposed the hospital to legal liabilities, and skewed public perception.
Additionally, the Association revealed that Dr. Akwulpwa has since faced threats and online harassment, placing his safety and mental health at risk.
Calling the Minister’s actions an “unwarranted attack” on hospital staff, the GMA demanded an unconditional apology from both Minister Akandoh and the Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini.
Meanwhile, in response to the strike by TTH medical staff, Minister Akandoh has urged health professionals to end their industrial action and resume dialogue in the interest of patients and the healthcare system. He reiterated his dedication to advocating for their welfare and pursuing sustainable improvements.
The incident has ignited a nationwide debate on ministerial authority, hospital independence, and the precarious state of Ghana’s public health system.
The GMA has reaffired its commitment to addressing the deep-rooted challenges in the healthcare sector and stated that it is closely monitoring developments and will guide its members as necessary.
