The Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has issued an emergency directive to its members, warning of potential industrial action over what it describes as an “unlawful” change in leadership at the hospital’s Central Laboratory.
In a letter dated May 5, 2026, and signed by John Kofi Nakoja, Chairman of the KBTH chapter, the union accused hospital management of unilaterally removing the duly appointed Head of Department for the Central Laboratory, a Medical Laboratory Scientist, and replacing the role with the Director of Medical Affairs, a physician.
The union argued that the move alters the established leadership structure and contradicts prior agreements reached with the Ministry of Health and acknowledged by the National Labour Commission.
“This action is a clear violation of good faith, administrative agreements, and professional governance structures,” the statement said.
As part of its directive, MELPWU instructed all members to remain on “high alert” and strictly adhere to union directives. It further directed members not to recognize or cooperate with any newly imposed leadership arrangement outside the agreed structure.
The union also warned members to prepare for the “immediate activation of industrial action upon further notice,” signaling a potential escalation of tensions within the facility.
“We will not allow the erosion of our profession through administrative manipulation,” the statement stressed, urging members to stay united, disciplined, and ready.
The development adds to ongoing tensions at KBTH, with concerns mounting over the impact of the dispute on healthcare delivery at the country’s premier referral hospital.
