Kristo Asafo founder’s burial halted as family dispute moves to court

The planned burial of Apostle Professor Emeritus Kwadwo Safo has been suspended after disagreements within the family over the implementation of his final wishes escalated into a legal dispute.

Nana Kojo Safo Akofena, Head of the Kantanka Family and Leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana, says lawyers for the family have been instructed to seek court intervention over arrangements for the late industrialist and founder of the Kristo Asafo Mission.

The burial, which was scheduled for Thursday, July 30, 2026, will not proceed pending the resolution of issues surrounding the late Apostle’s will.

Speaking at a media briefing in Accra, Nana Akofena said efforts to reach an agreement within the family had failed despite interventions by church elders, chiefs, queen mothers and other traditional leaders.

“It pains me deeply to discuss matters relating to my family and the Church in the public domain; however, circumstances beyond my control have compelled me to speak publicly to protect the truth, preserve the dignity of our late father, and provide clarity to the many people who continue to seek guidance on these matters,” he said.

He said the family had made “every reasonable effort” to reconcile the parties, including reaching out to his siblings, but the interventions had not produced the desired outcome.

Nana Akofena further alleged that some provisions of the late Apostle’s will had not been fully implemented, particularly a provision concerning custody of his remains.

“Particularly, the Kantanka family has not been given custody of the mortal remains of our late father, notwithstanding the provisions of the Will,” he said.

The family has engaged Kwame Gyan & Associates, led by Prof. Kwame Gyan, to pursue the matter in court.

Nana Akofena urged the public and members of the Kristo Asafo Mission and Kantanka Family to remain calm and avoid unverified claims, saying the family would pursue “a befitting burial in accordance with his wishes, the customs of the family, and all applicable customary and legal requirements.”
