Mahama to maintain Prof. Naana Opoku-Agyemang as NDC leadership meets today over running mate position

The leadership of the National Democratic Congress is expected today to affirm flagbearer John Mahama’s decision to maintain Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the 2024 general elections.

A statement from the Office of John Mahama today, March 7, said that “Mahama and the NDC are dedicated to building a formidable team that will work tirelessly to advance the interests of the Ghanaian people and reset the country on a path towards recovery and a prosperous future.”

The NDC had earlier announced on February 27 that it had received a letter from Mr. Mahama naming his preferred choice for the vice presidential position.

Following from that, the party indicated that both the Council of Elders and the National Executive Committee will have separate meetings to discuss the suitability of the candidate.

“The party is pleased to announce that a meeting of the Council of Elders will convene at 11:00 hrs. on Thursday, March 7, 2024, to deliberate on this significant matter.”

“Subsequently, the National Executive Committee will gather at 14:00 hrs on the same day to further consider the nomination,” the party’s statement of February 27 partly read.

However, even before the party officially unveils its running mate, discussions and public endorsements by individuals close to the former presidents suggest that he will be retaining Prof. Naana  Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate.
