The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has elected new regional executives across the country as the party steps up its internal reorganisation ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The regional executive elections, held largely on Saturday, August 15, form part of a broader restructuring exercise aimed at strengthening the party’s grassroots structures following its defeat in the 2024 general elections. The process is expected to culminate in the election of new national officers later this year.
The elections were largely peaceful, with sorting and counting taking place across the regions after polls closed at 2:00 p.m.
In the Ashanti Region, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as COKA, was elected regional chairman with 658 votes, defeating former Bantama MP and former Environmental Protection Agency Chief Executive, Dr Henry Kwabena Kokofu, who polled 269 votes. COKA succeeds Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
In the Greater Accra Region, former Health Minister Dr Bernard Okoe-Boye emerged as regional chairman with 490 votes, defeating Alfred Boye, who obtained 172 votes. His election ends Divine Otoo Agorhom’s tenure as regional chairman, a position he had held since 2018.
The Eastern Region largely retained its existing executive team. Jeff Konadu Addo was re-elected regional chairman with 405 votes, beating Kwadwo Boateng Agyemang, who secured 292 votes.
In the Central Region, Joseph Kobinah Esibu defeated incumbent chairman Percy Dennis by 278 votes to 161 to take over the regional chairmanship. Kojo Halm was elected First Vice Chairman.
The Western Region also recorded a change in leadership, with former Amenfi West parliamentary candidate Ignatius Kwesi Afrifa elected regional chairman after securing 265 votes against Abdul Ganiyu Mohammed’s 102. Kwasi Bonzoh was elected Regional Secretary.
In the Northern Region, incumbent Mohammed Baatima Adam, popularly known as Adam Samba, retained the regional chairmanship after defeating Inusah Amadu by 215 votes to 122.
The North East Region also retained its incumbent chairman, Fusheini Nurudeen, who secured 92 votes against Sulley Sambian’s 64.
In the Upper West Region, Abdul-Aziz Abdu-Rahaman, popularly known as Chairman White, won the chairmanship with 173 votes, defeating Kantong Alaska, who polled 86 votes. He subsequently pledged to unite the party and work towards increasing the NPP’s parliamentary representation in the region in 2028.
The Upper East Region elected Elvis Figo Awonekai, the NPP’s 2024 parliamentary candidate for Bolgatanga Central, as its new regional chairman. He secured 177 votes.
In the Savannah Region, Alhaji Iddrisu Sulemana narrowly defeated former Ghana Water Limited Managing Director Clifford Abdallah Braimah, polling 92 votes against Braimah’s 88.
The Ahafo Region elected Robert Sarfo-Mensah as regional chairman. He secured 65 votes, defeating Justice Appiah Antwi, who polled 56, and Kwabena Owusu Sekyere, who obtained 35 votes.
In the Volta Region, Makafui Kofi Woanyah retained the regional chairmanship after defeating Joseph Wallace.
The Oti Region, meanwhile, recorded a change in leadership. Dr Frank Yirenkyi defeated incumbent Evans Yaw Dapaah and Hajia Sherifa Selina Sekyere-Tijani, polling 83 votes against Dapaah’s 71 and Sekyere-Tijani’s 60.
In the Bono Region, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, retained the regional chairmanship with 201 votes.
The regional elections form part of the NPP’s wider reorganisation process, which began with elections at the lower levels of the party’s structures and is expected to proceed to the national executive elections. The party had earlier announced a timetable for the national elections as part of its restructuring programme.
