On Sunday, September 15th, 2024, the leadership of the NPP-USA Washington DC Metro Area Chapter, along with representatives from the NPP-USA Branch led by Chairman Ing. Janis Asare-Bediako, engaged with the Traditional Chiefs and Queen Mothers Association of Washington DC Metro (chiefs and queens enstooled or enskinned in Ghana but residing in the DMV area).

The purpose of the meeting was to update the chiefs and queens on the ongoing NPP campaign and to discuss aspects of the NPP manifesto related to chieftaincy, cultural values, and family traditions.

Chairman Janis opened the floor by thanking the chiefs for their continuous support of the chapter’s activities. He highlighted the importance of their presence, particularly in the NPP@30 anniversary celebration, which had recently concluded. He also formally announced the selection of Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, emphasising the strengths NAPO brings to the ticket.

Chairman Janis reviewed key manifesto policies, including the proposal to amend Section 63 of the Chieftaincy Act to allow for greater participation and engagement from traditional rulers. He also noted the commitment of the incoming Bawumia-led government to pay living allowances to support paramount chiefs, divisional chiefs, and queen mothers. Additionally, he stressed the NPP’s dedication to strengthening Ghanaian cultural and family values.

Addressing the issue of illegal mining (galamsey), the NPP delegation appealed to the chiefs for their support as key stakeholders in curbing the menace.

In response, the chiefs expressed appreciation for the continuous engagement and recognition of their role in national development. They welcomed the NPP manifesto proposals, describing them as long overdue and necessary steps in the right direction. However, they cautioned the NPP to ensure that these promises are not merely vote-seeking rhetoric but are fully implemented. The chiefs also advised the NPP to communicate their achievements clearly to the electorate, as the party’s accomplishments will be a key factor in deciding the next leader.

In closing, Chairman Janis thanked the traditional rulers on behalf of the delegation, reaffirming the party’s commitment to working with traditional leaders and the local chapter’s continued support in these efforts.
