The Office of the Rent Commissioner has directed private hostel operators across Ghana to temporarily suspend any intended increase in hostel accommodation fees for the 2026/2027 academic year, citing growing public concern over the rising cost of student accommodation.
In a press statement dated May 19, 2026, the Office said it had observed “continuous hikes in hostel accommodation fees across private hostels within and around Tertiary Institutions in the country,” warning that the trend was placing significant financial pressure on students, parents, and guardians.
“These persistent increments have become a matter of urgent public concern due to the economic burden placed on students, parents, and guardians,” the statement said.
According to the Office, unchecked increases in hostel charges could negatively affect students’ access to accommodation and overall welfare while pursuing higher education.
“In view of the above, the Office of the Rent Commissioner, together with the Rent Control Department, hereby directs all private hostel owners, facility managers, operators, and stakeholders within the student accommodation sector to place a TEMPORAL HOLD on all or any intended or proposed increment in hostel accommodation fees for 2026/2027 academic year until further notice,” the statement stressed.
The Rent Commissioner further announced plans to engage stakeholders within the student accommodation sector to deliberate on fair and sustainable pricing measures.
The stakeholder engagement will involve private hostel owners, managers, operators, student representative bodies, tertiary institution authorities, and other relevant stakeholders.
According to the statement, the meeting is expected to discuss concerns surrounding hostel fee increments, review compliance with existing rent regulations and consumer protection provisions, and explore practical measures to ensure affordability and fairness in the sector.
The Office also indicated that the engagement would promote “transparency and accountability within the student hostel accommodation sector.”
“All stakeholders are strongly encouraged to attend and cooperate fully with the directive in the interest of students, parents, educational institutions and national development,” the statement added.
