Sammy Gyamfi criticises Alan’s independent candidacy; labels him part of country’s economic woes

In response to Hon. Alan Kyerematen’s departure from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and his decision to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 elections, Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), took to social media on Monday to voice his views on the matter.

Sammy Gyamfi expressed concern over what he referred to as the “despotic” leadership of President Akufo-Addo, accusing him of attempting to install a puppet successor while suppressing those who disagree with him, reminiscent of past instances involving former NPP National Chairman Paul Afoko and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong.

The NDC spokesperson also empathized with Alan Kyerematen, acknowledging the continuous intimidation, harassment, and violence endured by Kyerematen and his supporters within the NPP, which ultimately led to Kyerematen’s resignation from the party.

He argued that Kyerematen’s departure from the NPP underscores the party’s unsuitability for democratic or peace-loving Ghanaians.

However, Sammy Gyamfi asserted, “Alan is not a viable alternative to the failed incumbent NPP government.” He criticized Kyerematen’s role as Trade and Industry Minister and his participation in the Economic Management team from 2017–2023, attributing economic challenges and neglect of projects like the Komenda Sugar Factory to his tenure.

Sammy Gyamfi questioned whether Kyerematen would have left the NPP if he had been treated fairly in the ongoing NPP presidential primaries, suggesting that his resignation stems from rejection by super delegates and the harassment of his supporters rather than a genuine desire to heal partisan divisions.

“Alan is not and cannot be the solution to the very mess he participated in creating”, Sammy Gyamfi said, equating Alan Kyerematen, Vice President Bawumia, and the NPP as having the same value.
