The NPP says it is disappointed in the resignation of its former flagbearer aspirant, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen.
In a press briefing on Tuesday, the General Secretary of the party, Justin Frimpong Kodua, described Mr. Kyerematen’s decision as ‘pre-meditated,’ considering the manner of his resignation, through a press conference.
According to the party, the announcement by Mr. Keyerematen to resign came as a shock to the party because a meeting between him and the Chairman of the Party, Stephen Ntim, after the special delegates poll did not suggest any such intentions.
“The disappointing part is the mode in which he resigned from the party, which was through a press conference, without prior notice to the party. The party wants to believe that his decision to hold a press conference to resign without first informing the leadership of the party suggests that he made a pre-meditated irrevocable decision to resign from the party,” Mr. Kodua stated.
“It needs emphasizing that when the Chairman of the Party, on behalf of the party, had a meeting with him after the August delegates conference in an attempt to bring all the ten aspirants together, he did not portray any sign of resigning from the party, let alone going independent”, he added.
The NPP said Mr. Kyerematen’s decision to quit due to his inability to lead the presential bid of the party runs counter to personalities who failed in their attempts to become flagbearers, such as Professor Albert Adu-Boahene, Dr. Safo Adu, Dr. J. A. Addison, Dr. Dsane Selby, J. H. Mensah, and Kwame Kodua.
The NPP, however, stated that they respect Kyerematen’s decision and expressed their gratitude to him for his contribution to the party’s growth and development.
Lawyer Kodua advised that current developments provide an opportunity for the party to demonstrate its tenacity and dynamism in the run-up to the 2024 elections, urging followers to reaffirm their loyalty to the party.
Mr. Kyerematen announced his resignation in a press conference on Monday, citing unfair treatment from leading personalities within the party.
He is set to contest as an independent presidential candidate in the 2024 elections under his Great Transformation Plan (GTP).
