Wontumi leaves EOCO custody after meeting bail conditions

The NPP’s Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) has been released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) following the successful fulfilment of his bail conditions.
Wontumi had been in EOCO’s custody as part of an investigation into multiple criminal offences, including allegations of fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. His legal team, led by Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that the bail conditions—set at GH¢50 million with two justified sureties—were met by Friday, May 30, 2025.

However, his release was delayed due to a pending motion filed by NPP Legal Affairs Director Gary Nimako to review the bail terms, a motion that was later withdrawn by his legal team on June 2.
According to his lawyers, the application had been filed without Wontumi’s direct authorization, and its withdrawal cleared the final obstacle to his release.

Following intense legal efforts and back-and-forth engagements, Wontumi was finally released from detention on Monday evening. His release was publicly confirmed by the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua, at EOCO headquarters. He noted that Wontumi had returned home and would continue to support the investigation process as required.

The ongoing investigation, led by EOCO, includes both domestic and international components.
Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, revealed that Wontumi is not only being investigated for financial crimes within Ghana but is also implicated in a broader international organised crime scheme.

EOCO is working closely with global law enforcement agencies as part of this wider probe, which involves tracing and potentially recovering assets linked to illicit activities, according to Dr. Srem-Sai.
