The Government and President of the Republic, H. E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo, has received widespread applause from all political divides and civil society for renovating and modernizing the National Museum, adding new artefacts and artifacts.
The museum had suffered a lack of major renovation with successive governments, ignoring the Adabraka-based structure. According to reports, former officials of Ghana’s National Museum misappropriated an amount of $1.5 million from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) & others meant to renovate the place, leading to its closure in 2015.
The Annex of the Museum, holding other artefacts is situated at Legon. The Tourism Ministry stepped in with $120,000 to revive the museum, and it’s now open to the public.
After 7 years of closure for rehabilitation work, the Ghana National Museum has reopened to patrons.
Below are some remarks by prominent people following the reopening of the museum:
Kojo Oppong Nkrumah @konkrumah
“The National Museum in Accra should be added to your list of tourist sites to be visited.
The Museum has now been fully rehabilitated, and restored to its original state with the inclusion of additional exhibits and artefacts.”
Manasseh Azure Awuni @Manasseh_Azure
“The government deserves commendation for rehabilitating and reopening the National Museum.”
Gabby Otchere-Darko @GabbyDarko
“Ghana’s National Museum was left to decay and finally shut down in 2015. The Akufo-Addo government chose to bring it back to life. A nation that does not celebrate and invest in its history, arts & culture will struggle with its future.”
Africa Development Watch @Africadew
Kudos to the Government of Ghana for the excellent work done on the country’s National Museum. This is splendid
There were, however, calls for the facility to be maintained well while generating the needed revenue.
