Kristo Asafo founder’s funeral rites underway despite court injunction

Funeral-related activities for the late founder of the Kristo Asafo Mission have continued at Gomoa Mpota despite a High Court order temporarily restraining the burial and funeral rites.

The High Court in Accra on Wednesday granted a 10-day interim injunction preventing former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, from proceeding with the funeral and burial arrangements of the late Apostle. The application was brought by the leadership of the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana amid an ongoing dispute over the deceased founder’s estate and the execution of his final wishes.

The injunction follows weeks of disagreement between sections of the late Apostle’s family and the leadership of the church over the organisation of the funeral.

Earlier, the purported head of the Kantanka family, Nana Kojo Safo Akofena, announced the suspension of all burial arrangements, stating that no official funeral would take place until the court determines issues surrounding the late Apostle’s will and related matters.

Despite these developments, funeral rites have begun at the church’s main industrial hub in Gomoa Mpota, where hundreds of church members have gathered to pay their last respects. Mourners sang indigenous funeral songs composed by the late Apostle in tribute to his legacy.

Some attendees told journalists they were either unaware of the court injunction or had come simply to mourn the late Apostle, irrespective of the ongoing legal dispute.
