The opposition New Patriotic Party has criticised social commentator Kevin Taylor over what it described as repeated attacks on former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
In a strongly-worded statement signed by the party’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, the NPP accused Taylor of verbally assaulting the legacy and person of the former statesman, insisting that the attacks had crossed the boundaries of political discourse and entered the realm of “desecration.”
“President Kufuor rescued this nation from economic collapse, strengthened our democracy, and earned the admiration of Ghana and the world,” the statement said. “He is not a partisan target; he is a father of this nation. Any society that permits the vilification of such a man without consequence has lost its moral footing.”
The party further criticized the silence of the governing National Democratic Congress, arguing that the lack of public condemnation from its leadership amounted to tacit approval of the attacks.
“The NDC’s silence is not neutrality. It is complicity,” the statement stressed, adding that Taylor’s “deep and well-documented ties” to the party made it impossible for the NDC to distance itself from the controversy.
The NPP also called directly on President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC leadership to publicly dissociate themselves from the remarks directed at Mr. Kufuor.
Among its demands, the party insisted that Kevin Taylor issue a “full, unqualified, and public apology” to the former President.
“There are lines that decency, culture, and conscience forbid us from crossing,” the statement noted. “The NDC must decide whether it will stand with our shared cultural values or with the savagery of Kevin Taylor.”
The statement concluded by warning that Ghanaians were closely observing what it described as the indifference of the Mahama administration and the NDC leadership over the matter.
