At the launch of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s Bicentennial Anniversary on Sunday, December 22, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo highlighted his government’s accomplishments and the role of faith in governance.

Addressing the congregation, President Akufo-Addo expressed pride in his administration’s achievements, attributing the progress to divine guidance and the support of the Ghanaian people.

“I speak to you proud of the achievements my government has chalked under God’s guidance and the support of our people,” he said, outlining his “transformative” progress in education, health, industry, infrastructure, and agriculture.

The President was optimistic about his legacy, predicting that history would view his tenure favourably.

“I’m confident in all humility that prosperity will judge well the Akufo-Addo government’s performance. Future generations will look back on this era and say that we laid a strong foundation for progress and prosperity,” he added.

Beyond governance, Akufo-Addo emphasised the enduring influence of the gospel in Ghana, citing the role of churches in shaping national character.

“The impact of the gospel is not only seen in schools and hospitals but in the moral fibre of our people,” he said, acknowledging the Presbyterian Church’s steadfast prayers and encouragement throughout his presidency.

“As President, I have often drawn strength and wisdom from the word of God…Your prayers have sustained me, and your faith has inspired me to persevere even in the most challenging times,” Akufo-Addo remarked.

His speech comes on the heels of a significant electoral defeat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the recent general elections.

The party, led by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, lost decisively to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) amid criticism, including some within the NPP, who have pointed to unpopular decisions by Akufo-Addo’s administration as key factors in the loss.
