The University of Ghana has launched its 75th anniversary in Accra with the aim of celebrating its achievements and exploring areas for improvement.
The year-long celebration, which is expected to commence in 2023, also saw the unveiling of the official anniversary logo.
The anniversary was launched by former Chief Justice and Chairperson of the University Council, Justice Sophia Akuffo, under the theme “Nurturing resilience: Adopting technology, embracing humanism.”
In her address, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah-Amfo, recalled when it started in 1948 as the University College of the then Gold Coast at Achimota to its present Legon campus.
She stated that the university has, over the years, distinguished itself as the go-to higher institution both in Ghana and Africa, with one of the finest faculties.
“Today, the UG is a household name, the first-choice destination for both SHS leavers and graduate students. It has formidable faculties who are authorities on various issues of national and continental concern and attracts some of the world’s best researchers, committed administrators and professionals,” she said
For her part, the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Elsie Addo Awadzi, who was the guest of honour, indicated that the premier university has made landmark contributions to the human capital of the country, and urged them to develop newer ideas and innovations to stay relevant,
The university’s chancellor, Mary Chinery-Hesse, praised the heights the institution has attained and emphasized the need to inspire its management to continue the outstanding job.
Madam Chinery-Hesse also urged everyone with a stake in the anniversary’s success to take an active role in the celebration.
The personalities who graced the launch included the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, Madam Akosua Frema Osei-Opare; the Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; former vice-chancellors of the university; representatives from international agencies; traditional leaders; lecturers; alumni of the university; and students.
